How Does a Septic System Function?
A septic system is used to clean and purify human and household wastewater and return the purified water as usable groundwater. The septic system includes an underground system made of a holding tank and a drain field filtering system, also called as absorption area.
The tanks are usually made of concrete or fiberglass material to ensure that the pathogens from the wastewater do not escape into the surrounding soil. The solid waste is treated by the enzymes and bacteria in the tank. The effluent leaving the tank is mostly liquid and is further treated by the action of the absorption area.
The effluent seeps into the soil beneath the drain field, where the microorganisms within the soil purify the liquid. This liquid finally reaches an aquifer as clean water suitable for human consumption.
